User Testing Demographic Questionnaire

Scenarios

Instructor

Panel

You are an Art History instructor finalizing the images you want to use for your course "The History of Landscape Painting". You have already uploaded the image files. You are reviewing your images and re-organizing them.

Student

Panel

You are an Art History student studying for your upcoming test on portrait landscape painting. You have located the exam study site for your class which features the images you will be tested on. You change the order of images in the gallery to make sure you haven't memorized information based on their logical order.

Tasks

  1. Please rearrange as many of the images as you wish.  Try to rearrange at least 4 images.
  2. Now that you are familiar with the application, I'd like you to move an image in the middle of a row to the middle of a different row.
  3. Now please move a middle image to the front of the top row.
  4. Finally, please move a middle image to the end of the bottom row.

Notes for Study Coordinator

Offering Help during the test

Don't offer help; let the user attempt to perform the task themselves. If they ask for help reply with:

  • "What do you think you/that would do?"
  • "What do you think that means?"

You want to observe whether the user has trouble moving the images into:

  • middle,
  • end and
  • beginning locations to get the performance data.

Post-test questions (ask these verbally after the user has filled out the questionnaire)

(Note: Don't say the examples in parenthesis to users; they are there to provide context to you.)

1. How easy or difficult was for you to reorder an image (using mouse and keyboard)?
o to middle of the list
o to the beginning of the list
o to the end of the list

2. (For mouse users) Did the mouse 'drag and drop' behaviour work as as you expected?
•    Did you notice the visual cue for choosing an image? (the outline around the image that the mouse is over signify to the user that that's the one they can move at the moment) How helpful was it to you?
•    Did you notice the visual cue for placing an image? How helpful was it to you? (position, valid/invalid targets)

3. Red Bar Visual Cue:
•    Did you notice the red bar? What do you think it is for?
•    Was it at all confusing to you? Why? (For example, did the red bar cause any confusion when they saw it appear near both the right edge of the (left image) and the left edge of the (right image)?
•    (If confusing) Can you think of how it could be made to be less confusing? (For example, should the red bar instead just appear in the middle of the two images?)

For Keyboard Users

•    Did the tool (and choice of keystrokes) work as you expected?
•    Were you able to move the image to the location you wanted? (Is there confusion on Macs between Ctrl key and Apple key?)
•    (If user is sighted) Was the outline around the image helpful in selecting the image? Was it helpful in placing the image?
