Idea 1: Game Design

Goal: have students create a game, and give opportunities for reactions and reflection.

Task 1: Individually, create a board game

  • To help scaffold the task, game components can be randomly selected from a jar or chosen from a list. For example, possible prompts could be: "grid", "path", "protect", "gather", "cards", etc.
  • Various tools (scissors, markers, etc.) and materials (paper, dice, pawns, etc.) will be around to assist in the process.
  • Encourage documentation of the process by using different tools like post-it notes, an iPad, etc.

Task 2: In a group, create another board game based on the ideas and concepts from Task 1

  • The same tools and materials from Task 1 are also available.

Task 3: As a group, teach someone how to play the game

Task 4: Iterate on individual board game

  • Based on the experience from group work and teaching the game, go back and iterate on your own game.

Idea 2: Co-Design Activity Concept - Rotating tasks

The purpose of co-design is to generate design artifacts that support the creation of the 3R tool.

NOTE: this is very early thinking.

Session is divided into parts:

  • Part 1: orient participants to 3Rs by having them participate in activities that highlight these 3 concepts
    • Reflection task
    • Reaction task
    • Refining task
  • Part 2: create a tool that specifically uses the 3Rs

Reflection task

  • Participants attempt to learn a concept using a resource (maybe like a PhET sim or some other OER)
  • Participants are asked to record their self reflections using a variety of tools as they engage with the content
  • Tools are multimodal in nature such as Google Doc, video / voice recorder, storytelling tool, chart paper, a tablet, etc.

Reaction task

  • Participants now swap places with another participant at a different activity
  • Participants are now asked to react spontaneously to the content they are learning using the different tools
  • Tools are multimodal in nature such as Google Doc, video / voice recorder, storytelling tool, chart paper, a tablet, etc.

  • Participants are asked to

  • Individually, create a design for a digital tool that uses the 3Rs in some way.
  • Use the different tools as before to help with this.

Collaborative design

  • Share your individual design and ideas with your assigned group.
  • Together, design a digital tool that uses the 3Rs.
  • Share your group's design with everyone.

Individual design refinement

  • Based the ideas that were shared, refine your initial idea.
